Making small changes
can make a big difference.
Keeping your home warm makes a huge difference to your whanau’s health. Aim for at least 18°C inside, or 20°C if you’ve got pepi, young tamariki, or kaumatua at home. When a house is cold and damp, people get sick more easily, and it can take longer to recover from things like the flu or RSV.
Moisture is another big one. If you can, dry your clothes outside, or use a vented dryer so all that damp air doesn’t end up back in your home. And don’t forget about blast ventilation — opening all your windows and doors for about 15 minutes. It sounds counter‑intuitive, but it quickly replaces the air without losing too much heat because the surfaces inside your home stay warm.
Insulation is really the foundation of a warm, dry home. Good insulation keeps the heat in and helps keep your power bills down. When insulation is missing or not up to scratch, it becomes much harder to keep your home warm and free from dampness, no matter how hard you try.
What We Do
The Raahui Pookeka Curtain Bank up-cycles unwanted and unused curtains, lines them, and distributes them to whanau that need curtains.
We can also do an assessment of your curtains to see if they could do with an upgrade and also check the placement of your curtain rails.
We appreciate your donations of second-hand curtains or fabric rolls or large offcuts of fabric as well as lining in good condition. We can only take curtains which:

Curtains for recycling can be dropped off at Friendship House 55 William Street Huntly or Te Whare Awhi 14 Fraser Street.
Why Curtains Are Important
Good quality, lined curtains that fit your windows generously (but not necessarily floor length) are an essential part of a warmer, more energy-efficient home.
Curtains make a significant difference to the warmth of a home. A third of all heat loss in an uninsulated home occurs through windows.
If your curtains are thin, single-layered, torn, or poorly fitting, they will not keep the heat in as well and are recommended to be replaced or upgraded (lined). Good quality, lined curtains are also recommended for double-glazed windows.
